P.O. Box 987

The petition below was taken to residents of Bremond, Calvert, Franklin, Hearne, and Marlin, Texas by volunteers from Texas Campaign for the Environment and Robertson County: Our Land, Our Lives.

It was signed by 689 people in those towns and several people from outside of the Brazos Valley;  400 of them agreed to have their names listed in a full-page ad that appeared in local newspapers during the week of August 10 through 17.

"Permits to produce toxic air pollution are under consideration by the State of Texas for sixteen coal burning power plants, two of which are in the north part of Robertson County near Bremond - TXU's Oak Grove Plant and PNM's Twin Oaks plant near Hearne.

"As an area resident, I agree with Texas Campaign for the Environment and Our Land Our Lives that:

  • In accordance with the policy of the Texas Farm Bureau (page 21), the state should "not issue permits for new coal-fired power plants unless they meet environmental standards equal to or better than a gas-fired plant with latest technology,

  • TXU's Oak Grove Plant and PNM's Twin Oaks plants do not meet this standard and put our health at risk.

  • Compromises that save money and increase profits for a private power company at the expense of our children and grandchildren's health are not acceptable.

  • A cleaner coal plant will employ as many people as a dirty plant.

  • Plants that could operate for 50 years should be built with the absolute best technology.

"Therefore, I urge the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and my elected officials to do all that they can to ensure further pollution reductions, in order to meet the Farm Bureau's Policy and protect the health of our community."
